What is the Mad PSI vented hood?
The Mad PSI carbon fiber vented hood is a hood that is vented and
made of lightweight material to enhance the looks, performance, and
aerodynamics of your MR2.

Do I have to adjust my stock latch?
Only the Gen 1 Type B vented hood requires requires the
owner to adjust the stock latch. If you purchased your vented hood
directly from us before July 17, 2003, then you have a Gen 1
vented hood. The vented hood will have a
few millimeters gap near the front bumper if you do not adjust the
stock latch. All vented hoods ordered after July 17, 2003 do not
require the stock latch to be adjusted.

Do I need to remove the plastic piece that is on top of the radiator
near the hood prop rod?
Yes. The plastic piece obstructs the air flow to the vents in
the vented hood. Thus, in order to allow the air from the radiator
to flow through the vents in the vented hood, the plastic piece
needs to be removed.

Is water going to get into the front trunk compartment?
No. The vented hood was specifically designed so that it
can be functional without letting water leak into the front trunk
compartment. The vents on the vented hood end before the
weather strip lining of the front trunk compartment. When you
remove the plastic piece on top of the radiator, all the water that
goes through the vents in the vented hood will fall on the radiator.
We have never had a problem with even a drop of water getting into
our front trunk compartment either after a rainstorm or a car wash.
In fact, we are so confident that our project car and various
sponsored cars have their stereo amplifiers mounted in the front
trunk compartment. Not a good idea if water was ever to seep
through.

This hood is
going on my daily driver. How will the wear and tear of daily
driving, and the ultraviolet rays of the sun affect the hood?
It is the responsibility of the owner to take all parts to a
qualified body shop to properly prep and fit aero parts. Products
with a clear coat or primer should still be taken to a body shop for
another layer. Regular maintenance such as various
protective waxes should help protect the hood as well. This is
especially true in areas such as Florida or Hawaii.
That being said,
the hoods already come with a DuPont clear coat - the good
stuff. The hood also has a one year warranty on the clear coat
from the manufacturer. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. The
vented hood pictured below is a Mad PSI Type B version 1 vented hood
in a USDM weave. It was on a daily driver for almost two years
and about twenty thousand miles! The daily driver was located
in Irvine, California (Orange County) where it sunny year round.
The only maintenance that was done was washing the hood with the
car. No clear coat or special wax was needed.

What material will the vented hood be available in?
Carbon
fiber.
•
What is the difference between the carbon fiber vented hood and the
"competition" carbon fiber vented hood?
The regular carbon fiber vented hood is very light and is
recommended for the street. For the hardcore Mr2 owner who wants the
lightest hood possible, we also make a "super lightweight"
competition carbon fiber vented hood. This competition hood will
weighs around 7 pounds, but is also more delicate. To our knowledge,
our competition hood is the lightest hood available for the MR2
despite it being a vented hood! Two pairs of our Sparco hood pins are
required.

Are hood pins required?
Yes, these vented hoods are extremely light,
thus, hood pins are required for
additional safety. We offer the Sparco Hood Pins, which are a
pair of steel pin hooks with guided plug and
click locking. They are very robust and reliable and available in
three colors (silver, blue, and red).

Does the hood come with a
latch like the OEM hood?
Yes.
•
Is the
vented hood functional?
Yes.
When paired with a Border radiator relocation kit, the vented hood
can offer a couple of functional benefits. For one, the fresh air
that heats up after passing through the radiator will now exit
through the vents in the hood providing an improvement in cooling.
In addition, air that would regularly contribute to "front end lift"
will also exit out of the vents in the hood, improving stability at
higher speeds. This is especially beneficial on the Mr2 since it has
a twitchy and sometimes "floaty" feel at higher speeds.

How much work was put into the
prototype vented hood that was used for the mold?
In order to account for the variability between MR2s, a white
1993 turbo MR2 and a 1991 normally aspirated red MR2 were both used.
We made sure the prototype vented hood fit perfect on BOTH MR2s
before we used it for our mold. This meant hours of labor for
sanding and test fitting numerous hoods. 10 months of work went into
make two different of molds from different manufacturers. We then
picked the better of the two. After producing one mold that was used
to make the Type B version 1 vented hood, we decided to update our
mold to make the vented hood even better. We started the development
of our Type B version 2 vented hood, which was redesigned from the
skeleton up. Once again, more test fit sessions were done to ensure
good fitment of our product. After July 17, 2003, all of our vented
hoods being sold will be the version 2. No one said being a perfectionist was
easy! Below are pictures of test fitting and sanding the vented
hood. The yellow marks are areas that were sanded.
