What is the Mad PSI carbon fiber rear diffuser?
The Mad PSI carbon fiber rear
diffuser is a shaped section of the MR2's rear underbody which
improves the look and aerodynamic properties of the MR2.
•
How was the
rear diffuser developed?
When designing
the Mad PSI rear diffuser we did not take an existing rear diffuser
off of another car and adapt it to the MR2, because every car has
its own unique aerodynamic profile, weight distribution, and
handling characteristics. Instead, the Mad PSI rear diffuser
is a bespoke rear diffuser designed professionally and
specifically for the Toyota MR2. In order to ensure that it
has the optimal design, we invested many years to research and
design the rear diffuser and collaborated with Japan's best MR2
tuners to test and refine it. These tuners used the same exact
Mad PSI rear diffuser on their MR2 race cars on Japanese race
circuits as you will have for your car. The final product is
the only professional race-spec production rear diffuser
available for the MR2.
•
Is the rear diffuser functional?
Yes. The rear
diffuser incorporates a venturi tunnel to create a venturi effect.
The venturi effect is a phenomenon which is described by Bernoulli's
equation. When a fluid, such as air, is flowing through a pipe, and
is forced through a narrower section of pipe, the pressure decreases
while the velocity increases. This is similar to the Bernoulli
effect for enclosed conduits which states that the higher the
velocity of a fluid, the lower the pressure. Thus, as the air moves
faster underneath the car and through the rear diffuser, it causes
the high pressure air to push down on the car in order to reach the
lower pressure air.
This creates downforce which
exerts a downward pressure on a moving vehicle and helps to
counteract loss of control at high speeds.
The faster the vehicle is moving, the more downforce is created.
Below is an example of how underbody aerodynamics, such as a rear
diffuser, can create pressure differences (Ferrari F430 pictured
below).

•
What is the
Bernoulli's equation?
The equation was derived by Daniel Bernoulli, who investigated the
forces present in a moving fluid:
P + ½ ρ v2
+ ρ g h = constant
where P is
pressure,
ρ is the fluid
density,
v is the velocity,
h is elevation,
and g is the
gravitational acceleration.
•
What material will the diffuser be available in?
The diffuser will be available in carbon
fiber.
•
Is the rear diffuser compatible with my setup (e.g.,
exhaust, rear bumper, etc.)?
Since it is unfeasible to create a functional rear diffuser that
is perfectly compatible with every single aftermarket setup,
depending on your setup, you may need to modify the rear diffuser to
accommodate your unique setup.
